AI mostly names someone else.
When we asked AI who to hire for 147 local service businesses, a local business was named in fewer than 1% of the answers. These numbers are across all trades in our study: painters, electricians, HVAC, roofers, plumbers, auto shops, exterminators, garage doors, movers, landscapers, chiropractors and dentists.

AI can only recommend what it can read. These are the gaps we see most often for independent shops.
The makes you know aren't listed
Drivers ask about their car: a Subaru mechanic, a shop for European cars. If you never say what you specialize in, AI can't match you.
Services buried or missing
Brakes, diagnostics, inspections, tires, A/C. If your profile just says "auto repair," AI has little to go on.
Reviews that don't mention trust
Drivers ask for an honest shop. Reviews that say "fair price" or "explained everything" are what AI looks for, and most shops never ask.
Hours and drop-off unclear
Early drop-off, Saturday hours, a ride or a loaner: if you offer it and don't say so, it doesn't count.
What AI checks for a repair shop.
Six things the assistants look for before they name a business like yours. We measure about 50 factors in all; these matter most in your trade.
The right Google category
Auto repair shop as your main category, with categories like brake shop or tire shop added if they fit.
Makes and services
Which makes you work on and what you do: brakes, diagnostics, inspections, A/C, tires, oil changes.
Certifications
ASE-certified technicians, inspection station, warranty on your work: whatever you really have, stated plainly.
Reviews that name the job
Reviews that mention the repair and how you treated the customer tell AI why to trust you.
Matching listings
The same name, address and phone on Google, Yelp, BBB, Facebook and your website.
A site AI can read
A clear services page, your hours, an FAQ and LocalBusiness schema.

Drivers rarely ask for "auto repair." They describe a noise, name their car or ask for someone they can trust. Questions like these:
- "My car is making a grinding noise when I brake. Where should I take it in Billerica?"
- "Who's an honest mechanic near Somerville, MA that knows Subarus?"
- "Where can I get a state inspection near Andover on a Saturday?"
"My car is making a grinding noise. Where should I take it in Billerica, MA?"
"…for brake noise, Competitor A and Competitor B are well reviewed, or you could try a national chain like Competitor C…"
What helps a repair shop get named
National chains have their details everywhere: every location, every service, every hour. Independent shops often know just as much and have far less of it written down. AI recommends what it can read, so the fix is mostly getting what you already do into words.
- Name the makes you know best. If you're the shop people bring their Subarus, Toyotas or German cars to, say it on your profile and your site. "We work on all makes" is fine too, but say which ones you know best.
- List every service, plainly. Brakes, diagnostics, check engine lights, inspections, tires, A/C, oil changes. Each one is a question someone asks.
- Say whether you do state inspections. In Massachusetts, a lot of drivers look for an inspection station by town. If you are one, say so on your profile and site.
- Be clear about the practical stuff. Hours, early drop-off, Saturdays, rides or loaners, and how you handle estimates. Drivers ask about these, and short, honest answers are what AI quotes.
- Ask for reviews that describe the visit. Hand over a card with your review link at pickup, or text it after. It's fine to say it helps if they mention the repair. Never pay or offer anything for reviews.
- Keep your details matching. An old phone number, a previous owner's shop name or a duplicate listing at an old address makes AI unsure who you are. These happen a lot when shops move or change hands.
- Answer the questions you hear at the counter. Whether you call before doing extra work, whether you'll install parts a customer brings, what your warranty covers. Short, honest answers are what AI likes to quote.
Much of this is your Google Business Profile, your listings and clear pages on your website. If you don't have a site, or it's holding you back, we build one.
Questions, answered.
Not here? Ask us on a call.
Can you answer our calls when we're on a job?
Yes. Your phone still rings first. Calls you miss, and calls after hours, go to our AI receptionist. It answers in your business's name, says it's an AI assistant and that the call may be recorded, flags urgent calls like a car that won't start, and sends you a summary right away.
Do drivers really ask AI where to take their car?
More every month. And people who still search Google now often see an AI answer at the top of the page, which picks businesses in a similar way.
Can an independent shop compete with the national chains?
You can close the gap. AI doesn't pick by ad budget. It picks businesses it can find clear, consistent information about, and the big brands simply leave that information everywhere. A local shop can do the same.
Can you guarantee AI will recommend us?
No, and nobody honestly can. Search and AI results change; we show you exactly what we did and what moved.
How long until we see a change?
Profile and listing fixes usually show within a few weeks. AI answers catch up more slowly, usually several weeks to a couple of months. We re-check every month so you can see what moved.
