When Somerville asks AI who to hire, who gets named?
We checked 26 Somerville businesses in our study of who AI recommends. Here's what we found, and what we do to help local businesses in the city get named.

We asked AI about 26 Somerville businesses.
In October 2026 we asked an AI assistant (Claude) who to hire, the way a customer would, for 26 local businesses in Somerville. The other numbers below are for the whole study, across all three towns.
Read the studyThe three towns are Billerica, Somerville and Andover, plus one business in Derry, NH. We don't report results town by town, and we don't name the local businesses that were left out.
AI mostly named the big brands.
Across all three towns in our study, most answers went to national brands and franchises, not the shop down the street. These came up most:
The four gaps we found most · study-wide
97% had no LocalBusiness schema
58 of 60 were missing the bit of code that tells Google and AI your name, phone, hours and area.
92% had details that didn't match
105 of 114 didn't show the same name, address and phone on their website and directories.
81% had no simple FAQ answers
103 of 127 didn't answer the common questions customers ask, where AI could read them.
74% had a vague page title
90 of 121 had a homepage title that didn't say what they do and where.

Somerville is small and packed, and people often think in squares as much as in town names. Someone near Davis Square, Union Square or Ball Square with a leaking pipe searches "plumber near me", or asks their phone "Who's the best plumber in Somerville?", and calls one of the names that come back. The assistant has to decide which businesses actually work here, and it can only go on what it can find written down.
"Near me" means near the customer
Somerville sits right up against Cambridge, Medford, Arlington, Everett and Boston's Charlestown, so a lot of the businesses people hire here are based just over the line. I-93 and Route 28 bring in crews from further out too. That's fine, as long as AI can tell you cover Somerville. If your profile and website only mention the town your shop is in, a customer near Assembly Row or Teele Square may never hear your name.
"Who's the best plumber in Somerville?"
"…in Somerville, Competitor A and Competitor B are well reviewed. Competitor C also serves Cambridge and Medford…"
Say which towns you serve
AI pieces together where you work from the service area on your Google Business Profile, the towns named on your website and your listings, and what customers write in reviews. If you work in Somerville, Cambridge and Medford, say so in all of those places: set the towns on your profile, add a page or a short section on your site, and answer "Which areas do you serve?" in a plain FAQ. Naming the neighborhoods people use, like Davis Square or Union Square, can help too, as long as you really work there.
What we'd check first
Whether your profile lists Somerville and the towns around it, whether your name, address and phone match everywhere, and whether your homepage title says what you do and where, like "Plumber in Somerville, MA". These are small fixes, and they're the ones we found missing most often in our study. Search and AI results change; we show you exactly what we did and what moved.

Do you work with businesses in Somerville?
Yes. We're a small team based in Massachusetts, and we help local service businesses across Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire, including Somerville and the towns around it.
Do I need an office in Somerville to show up?
Not necessarily. AI and Google look at where you say you work: the service area on your Google Business Profile, the towns on your website and your listings. If you serve Somerville from a town nearby, say so clearly in those places. Nobody can promise AI will name you, but being clear about where you work is a basic first step.
Can you check what AI says about my business in Somerville?
Yes, for free. Our free AI visibility check asks ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini the questions your customers in Somerville ask, and shows you whether you're named and how many competitors come up instead. Your score shows up in about a minute.
How long until AI starts naming my business?
There's no guarantee it will. Profile and listing fixes usually show within a few weeks, and AI answers catch up in several weeks to a couple of months. We re-check every month and show you exactly what we did and what moved.
